How to choose a plan you will not regret

Updated May 4, 2026

The fastest way to regret a plan is to pick it off premium alone. A smarter approach checks four buckets before you enroll—especially if you are comparing multiple metal tiers and carriers.

1) Doctors and hospitals

Confirm your providers are in network for the plan you are considering. If you travel frequently, ask how urgent and emergency coverage works away from home.

2) Prescriptions

Check the formulary for your medications. Pay attention to tiers, quantity limits, and prior authorization—those details often drive surprise costs.

3) Deductible vs premium tradeoff

A lower premium with a high deductible can be a good fit if you rarely use care—but painful if you hit the deductible early in the year. Model at least one realistic scenario (therapy visits, labs, a planned procedure).

4) Worst-case protection

Look at the out-of-pocket maximum and how coinsurance works after the deductible. Major medical is partly about protecting against large, unexpected bills—not just copays for routine visits.
